The Federalist Society is a national nonpartisan group of conservative and libertarian law students and lawyers interested in the current state of the legal order. We are founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be. We seek to promote awareness of these principles and to further their application through our activities.
The University of Kansas chapter has encouraged discussion of key legal and political issues through a series of debates and panels on health care reform, immigration and environmental policy. We have also hosted Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and KU Law alumnus David Stras, as well as natural law scholar Professor J. Budziszewski from the University of Texas. Our final event of the semester will be a speech by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt at 12:30 p.m. April 14 in Room 104. Lunch will be served. For more information, email fedsoc@ku.edu.
